February Goals!

I made a chart (just like I have since November) with my February goals. I keep it on my fridge and log in on it every day. I am especially excited about February, since I think it's going to be a great month for me! Good things on all fronts are expected!!

My finalized goals are as follows:

Daily intake < 1,800
Daily deficit > 750
Gym 5 days a weeks (preferably Monday - Friday, but allow for flexibilty and make-up days!)

At the gym: Alternate chest, shoulders, and back one day with biceps, triceps, and legs the next. 30 minutes of aerobic activity after weight training. Crunches = 75 per gym visit.

Weigh in will be Mondays.

Breakfast!

5 eggs 3/4 can black beans and 3/4 bag of frozen broccoli.

Last Day of January!

Tomorrow I start officially on my new goals.  I have already started the diet portion.  I think my 3 pounds lost I can attribute to the new diet AND lots of water!

My weight today is 328 - That makes my total lost 70 pounds!  I feel great and all of my old clothes are falling off of me.  I have had to buy a new coat and I am happy to say that I bought a 22/24.  It is a bit snug but it does zip!

Talk to ya tomorrow...

My numbers from yesterday were pretty good. I was really busy finishing up with butchering for the season. Our last task was cutting and wrapping the beef. I'm so glad to be done with it! We have the meat from 1 1/2 hogs and 1/4 beef in the freezer now. All together, it cost us $525 and 6 days work. We will have enough beef and pork for a year. In case you're wondering that's about 320 pounds at about $1.56 a pound. That includes all the best cuts and all the ground product.

My next "home-spun" task is making and canning beef broth. I'll make and can enough beef broth for a year -- about 21 quarts of stock. I use it for soups, stews and other recipes.

These days of butchering are fun and family/friend oriented. There's always food around. Since we are in a rush in the morning, we always stop at McDonald's for breakfast. Doughnuts, sweetbreads, chips, biscuits, stews are the normal offerings for snacks and lunch. Yesterday, all those things were present. I took orange wedges and homemade banana nut bread as my contributions. At McDonald's, I tried their new fruited oatmeal and a yogurt parfait. (The oatmeal was pretty good!) I ate what amounted to 2 oranges, a bowl of stew, and two slices of my banana nut bread while we were there. I didn't have one doughnut! Yep! Not one! I didn't have a biscuit and I avoided the chips. It's changes like these that make me most proud of my efforts since October.

While the weight may not be falling off, I am losing weight. More importantly, though, I am making healthy choices. I am changing the way I eat.

Today is my "day off." That's funny! I am busy again today. I have to pick up my dad from the hospital, take my stinky comforters to the laundry mat (too big for the washer at home), clean up from the weekend, and go to the gym. Can I please have a real day off??!!

From yesterday: Steps = 6,990. Calorie deficit = 693. Crunches = 0. Calories consumed = 1,943.

Have a great day!

Numbers for 1/29

BodyMedia FIT data for January 29, 2011
Calories Burned - 3025 | Calories Consumed - 1670 | Total Activity - 0:25 | Moderate Activity - 0:25 | Vigorous Activity - 0:00 | Steps Taken - 5088 | Sleep Duration - 4:39 | Lying Down - 5:28 | Sleep Efficiency - 85%

Ok, so I thought my calories would be much higher for yesterday.  They ended up right about the same as I ate before.   1600 to 1800 calories seems to be my norm.  It is hard for me to eat more or less.

One more thing I am doing is to drink a heck of a lot more water.  I also put some lemon in for flavor and for the effect it has on blood sugar.  It helps to keep the insulin response low.  I will also experiment with grapefruit juice to see if that can help on my binge days.

Going to try to make the gym today after work!

Sunday, January 30, 2011

I have been eating too much the past two days! Since I didn't do any aerobics Friday (due to my extrememly sore legs) or Saturday (a "no gym day"), my deficit has been too high.

I am also refining my new workout routine. I really like adding weight training and switching from an all walking plan, but don't think I'm getting enough aerobics with just 20 minutes on the treadmill or the elliptical. My exercise plan for February will be 10 minutes of walking warm-up on the treadmill, weight training, crunches and 30 minutes on the elliptical. This will be Monday through Friday. Saturday and Sunday will be "off" days. I'll have an outline for February soon; I like having a chart that I can post on the fridge so I can keep track of how I'm doing!

I am also going to continue to try and consume 1,800 or less calories each day and maintain a deficit of 750 or more. I will eat the bulk of my food at breakfast and lunch and have a very light dinner (cereal, fruit, yogurt). My big meal will be lunch.

I like Tracy's "slow carb" meal plan. I will watch her and consider it as an option. I like beans and could eat them every meal. They are filling, have lots of fiber, and have protein. Since I am a carnivore and plan allows meat, I think I could do well with it. I also like vegetables. Giving up dairy sounds hard, though. My other hesitattion is the fact that I believe a well-rounded diet is best. I don't think eliminating entire food groups is a good idea. Keeping that on the back burner for now.

From yesterday: Steps = 4,994. Calorie deficit = 364. Calorie consumption = 2,004.

Have a great day! Tracy, you're an awesome possum!!!

Slow Carb Lunch!

Yummy "slow carb" lunch!

-- Sent from my Palm Pre

1/28

It is now the end of January and I have totally busted the challenge for January!  I have spent the last month researching and learning about other methods of "fat" loss and gaining some muscle.  I think I know my plan now for the month of February....  Ultimate goal is to lose 20 pounds in February!

1. I am hiring a personal trainer.  I will work with a personal trainer 2 times per week for 30 minutes each.  I am thinking about purchasing a kettle bell for home as well.  This a quick and effective workout that I can do at home.  Expensive to get started though!

2. I am going to do the 4 hour body "slow carb" diet for the entire month of February.  This will include one cheat day!  I am excited about the cheat day as I will probably have some ice cream!  What is the slow carb diet?  Well, it is really pretty simple, you eat a lean protein, legume and vegetable for each and every meal.  No dairy is allowed and no grains.  Fiber will come from the veggie and beans.  There is no limit to the amount that you can eat. I will obviously take a calcium supplement.

3. I am going to set up the blog so that I can post pictures of my meals.  I will snap a pic with my phone and then upload it immediately just before I eat.  This is a great diary to have and is almost better than logging the food.

4.  Although the slow carb diet does not require that you log food, I am going to do it!  I want those number is my body media.   I want to test the calories in... calories out theory.  The author of the 4 hour body says that there are way too many other factors than that simple calculation.  I tend to believe he is VERY right.  There is way more to it than that.  The main other factor is SUGAR... Sugar is the enemy of any dieter!

5.  I am also planning on doing at least 30 minutes of continuous walking at some point in every day.

6.  I will be drinking at least 16 oz of water 5 times per day.  Preferably with lemon.

I will be adding to this over the next couple of days.  I am still tweaking my plans.  I am also trying to get my husband started on this plan for just the month of February and then he will go back to normal.  I would love to see how much weight that he can drop during the month... more importantly, how much we can make his body fat percentage go down!  Men have a huge advantage in that arena!

I had my first slow carb breakfast this morning and my 8 year old LOVED it.  I kind of liked it too.  The hardest thing to do will be to eat beans at every meal.  The rest is a walk in the park.

Have a great day!

I was so sore yesterday that when we went to the gym, I just exercised my arms and did crunches. Afterwards, I sat in the sauna and then the steam room to loosen up a bit. My numbers from yesterday aren't very good! :(

Steps - 5,029. Calorie defict = 342. Crunches - 75.

Have a great day!

Friday, January 28, 2011

Oh my gosh! My legs are so sore that I can barely walk!!! I have been working hard at the gym and I sure can feel it. I have added walking lunges to my routine. In combination with the leg workout yesterday and the elliptical as my aerobics have made my quadriceps very sore. The elliptical is waaaaayyyy harder than the treadmill. I can do 20 minutes. I am sweaty and my legs feel like cooked spaghetti (not even al dente!)when I get off. I am glad to be feeling the change! It reminds me of when I first started walking in October.

I enjoyed my day off yesterday. We spent extra time at the gym. I used the sauna, whirl pool, and cooled off in the big pool. Afterwards, we went to lunch at Bob Evens. I had their Cranberry Chicken Pecan salad. I love that salad. I also treated myself to some of their new cherry bread. It's more like a cake without frosting. I counted it as a portion of cherry cake. Since I had eaten a lot, I didn't have dinner and passed on the ice cream birthday cake at my niece's party. Good thing I stopped eating after lunch because my consumption was high yesterday! Who says that I don't have willpower!!??

From yesterday: Calorie deficit = 781. Stpes = 9,933. Calorie consumption= 2,005 Crunches = 75 (3 sets of 25 w a 12 second rest between sets)

Thursday, Janaury 27, 2011

I got weighed this morning and was at 242. My waist measured 44.5. Since October 24when I started, my waist is down 2 inches and my weight is down 18 pounds. I am down two pounds since last week's weigh in.

The last six weeks have been beyond frustrating as far as weight loss is concerned. Since my visit to the doctor's 8 days ago, I have had a calorie deficit averaging 825per day. My calorie consumption has averaged 1827. Maybe things are starting to move in the right direction again. Six weeks is a long time to wait for the scales to move. I'm proud of myself for continuing my effort.

I am trying to listen to my body. It seems to be telling me that I can lose weight, albeit, slowly. I think the message it's sending me is to keep calories below 1,800 per day and maintain a deficit of 700 or more. I will keep trying.

I am really enjoying my gym workouts. Yesterday, I tried really hard during the weight lifting portion. I actually made grunting noises during some of the exercises! (A little embarassing!) I found that wearing my headphones helps when lifting as well as when I'm doing my aerobics. Today, I'm off and I plan to spend some extra time at the gym.

I am sort of concerned because the new routine doesn't produce the high step numbers or as much "moderate physical activity" on the BodyMedia reports. Because I have started the new routine, my January Challenge step goal will not be met.

From yesterday: Steps = 7,640. Calorie deficit = 854. Crunches = 75. (3 sets of 25 w a 12 second rest between sets) Calorie consumption= 1.583.

Have a great day!!

January 26, 2011

Very busy today! From yesterday: Steps = 7,300. Calorie deficit = 731.
Crunches = 75. Calories consumed = 1,732.

"Weigh-in Wednesday" = 245.

What looked like a weight loss early in the week didn't stick. Bummer.

Weigh in Wednesday!

331!  That makes 11.5 pounds in a bit less than a month!  Woohoo!

Goals for February

I have been eluding to the fact that I plan to change my exercise routine in February. I have finalized my plan. According to exercise physiologists and the gym rats that I know, you need to change things up every 6 weeks or so.

For February and for part of March, I'll be doing the following:

Monday: 6 Chest exercises, Crunches, 20 minutes at heart rate on treadmill

Tuesday: 5 shoulder exercises, Wrist curls, Crunches, 20 minutes at heart rate on the elliptical.

Wednesday: 5 back exercises, Crunches, 20 minutes at heart rate on the treadmill

Thursday: 6 leg exercises, Reverse wrist curls, Crunches, 20 minutes at heart rate on the elliptical.

Friday: 8 arm exercises, Crunches, 20 minutes at heart rate on the treadmill.

Weight training will be on the free weights. I will do three sets to muscle exhausion. Cardio will be AFTER weight training.

If I want to go to the gym on Saturday and/or Sunday, I can swim or walk some extra miles on the treadmill.

As far as calories, I will try to maintain an intake of 1,800 calories and a defict of at least 750. Priority will be placed on the deficit of at least 750.

Can you take this and make it into "Late Winter Challenge," Tracy?

Tuesday, January 25, 2011

At the gym yesterday, I asked to use their body fat measurement device. Since Tracy measured her's, I thought I'd measure mine. The trainer warned me that it could be off by as much as 10% either way. He also said the important thing was downward movement. I agree! At 240 and 5'6" tall. I am 49.6% body fat. That's 112 pounds of fat. My goal is about 30% and about 180 pounds. I have 60 pounds of fat to lose. That's what I figured. Just like the scale, though, these numbers are not really scientifically accurate. What's important in both is a downward trend.

I have lost weight! Cutting back on my calories and increasing my deficit has helped. Tomorrow on "Weigh in Wednesday," I'll let you know how much.

From yesterday: Steps = 12,537. Calorie deficit = 744. Crunches = 75.

Keep on truckin'!

51.8%

That is my body fat percentage.  That means that I have 159 pounds of muscle and bone on my bod.  Wow!  If you need another 20% of body fat, that means my goal weight would be 190.  Holy Guacamole!  I must be made like a brick house!  Yeah... Rick James was singing about me!  :-)    I am sure as my weight lowers some of my muscle mass will go away too.  After all there is much less of me to support!  I don't know... I can't seem to find any good info out there about body fat percentages and what happens as a severely obese person loses weight.  I guess I am about to find out!

My goal will be to get this percentage to 20 to 25%.  This is all that really matters now that I can measure it!   That is about another 135 pounds.  Sweet... I got this!

Laterz! Yes, I am feeling much better today.  Not so much like walking death!

January 24, 2011

I had some "personal bests" yesterday! My calorie deficit was 1,360 and my physical acivity was 3 hours, 24 minutes! Not bad, eh? Next Sunday we cut and wrap the beef and we're done with butchering for the year! Lots of work, but it's worth it!!

I didn't keep below 1,800 calories yesterday like my doctor suggested, but because I moved around so much, it didn't really matter. I also missed doing my crunches.

It's interesting to observe my body and its reactions to things like an increase in physical activity. Even though I ate well throughout the day, because I burned so many calories, I was extremely hungry after we got done. When I plugged in and saw that I had a deficit of over 2,00 calories, I understood why. I enjoyed a big dinner of about 700 calories and felt better almost immediately.

This is why I love the BodyMedia armband so much. It helps me listen to my body. Sometimes, I don't listen to my body. I listen to and follow my emotions instead. While this might be good for other things, following your emotions when it comes to food is NEVER a good idea!

We are body, mind and soul. Each gives us feedback about our lives. Sometimes one of those elements speaks louder than the others. Sometimes we ignore the small voice of one. I'm overweight because something in me isn't balanced. My body wants to be healthy. It really does try to guide me by sending messages. Sometimes your body whispers things like, "Hey, you shouldn't be huffing and puffing when you tie your shoes. It's happening becuase your lungs are getting smashed when you bend over. Your belly is too big!"

When my emotions speak too loudy and rule my consumption, they say, "Those mashed potatoes (cake, mac and cheese, whatever) will make you feel better. They will fill your belly with comfort and warmth." Emotional voices from inside are sometimes right and sometimes wrong. In the latter example. They are both right AND wrong. The food will comfort FOR A TIME, but later, they will whip back and do the exact opposite and you'll feel like crap about yourself.

Balanced. Listening. Considering. Choosing.

From yesterday: STeps = 10,722. Calorie deficit = 1,360. Crunches = 0.

Have a great day! Big hugs all 'round!

I'm burning the candle at both ends! Things are very busy around here. I have used all my "days off" and my 8K step days for the January Challenge. I think I can still make the step goal, but am very worried about next Sunday. As I look ahead, I'm not sure that I'll be able to get 10k in that day.

Anyyyyywaaaaayyyyy, here are my numbers from yesterday: Steps = 8,862. Calorie deficit = 672. Calories consumed = 1896. Crunches = 0

All for now! Off and running for another busy day!

Crunches - 30

So, I am starting to really feel like I am dropping the ball this month.  I am sorry for that Diana!  I hope that my lack of motivation for exercise is not effecting you (I don't think it is).  I am struggling if I am completely honest.  I am at a point that I need to change what I am doing.  I am searching for the answers constantly.  I am considering personal training to get me into shape.  In the latest book I am reading he has some interval exercises that he outlines... well, I could not perform some of them if I tried for weeks!  Holy cow, I need some serious work!  I need to move into that firm and toned body now.  I have dropped 66 pounds and I can actually move without killing myself.  It is time!  How am I going to do this though?  This is when the frustration starts to set in for me.... I need to go to that next level but I just not sure what will work without breaking the bank!

Today we are taking the kids to a movie.  We will take our own popcorn (air popped for me with no salt) and waters.  Dinner is beef and noodles with some sort of veggie or salad (or both).  Exercise... I am going to try to make it to the gym!

Have a good one!

Saturday, January 22, 2011

Yesterday I took my last "off" day for the January Challenge. I did very well in regard to calorie cosumption, considering that I did no exercise at all. I listened to my doctor's advice and consumed 1,801 calories. She told me to keep it below 1,800. Not bad for a completely sedentary day.

We took a yound friend of Michael's with us to pick up the hogs. He's in his early 20's. His greatest desire is to move from the city and begin a subsistence-style life on a farm. He was raised in the city and never so much as grew a tomato plant in his front yard. He's latched onto Michael as his mentor. In an effort to move towards the lifestyle, he's asked to tag along when we do the hogs this weekend. He's a smart kid and assuming he could raise the resources, I think he might be able to pull it off to some degree.

What lessons can I take from this young man? It's my belief that people come into your life when you need them, even if they just "pass through" for a moment. Here are few things I can learn from Brandon 1) Don't be afraid to step out your comfort zone 2) Your "teachers" can be anyone 3) Lives can be changed 4) If something calls to you, walk over and take a look. It might be what your seeking.

I'm going to think about these lessons and try to let some of his young energy and fearless spirit infect me. Since he and his dog are spending the entire weekend with us, I'll be able to keep these lessons in the front of my mind.

From yesterday: Steps = 4535. Calorie deficit = 695. Calorie consumption - 1,801.

I love GREEN TEA! I bought a handy 30 cup water warmer at Kroger yesterday and am keeping hot water for the family to hot drinks.  It is awesome to just have hot water whenever we need it.

I started a new book. "The New ME Diet: Eat More, Work Out Less, and Actually Lose Weight While You Rest". So far so good.  I agree with everything they are saying so far.  The big thing that has stuck out is that they make a comparison of a "sprinter" and a "distance runner" and how their bodies are so completely different.  The sprinter has very little fat and LOTS of muscle.  Where the distance runner has MORE body fat and looks more gaunt.  I have noticed that myself but never made the connection to their routines and diets.  Personally, I want to look more like the sprinter!  The authors are biochemists and they go through the biochemistry of the body and how to "fix" our body's metabolism.  So far it looks like they break down into a few body types and then they give solutions based on the body type.  Much of the hormonal info is also in YOU on a diet.  These guys do a better job of explaining it to me though.  I will let you know what I read.  I will be doing lots of this today as I am not going anywhere! YAY!

Dinner?  Who knows!  :-)  I think I will probably make my quick eggplant recipe on the recipe tab with whole wheat pasta! YUM!

I am feeling good about decreasing my intake. I will try to keep my deficit at greater than 750 and my intake at less than 1,800. Hopefully, we will see some good results very soon!

From yesterday: Steps = 8,882. Calore deficit = 792. Crunches = 50. Calories consumed = 1,735

My January Challenge stats are looking good. I believe I will make all the goals (including calorie deficit!) I am using the last "day off" today. We are driving to pick up the hogs right after I get off work. Saturday and Sunday, my steps will be low, but should fit into one of the categories. I plan on knocking off my last
15k day on Monday.

Have a great day!

Do carbs have a bad wrap?

My feeling today is that they do!  I am eating big carbs every morning (oatmeal with raisins) and eating mostly carbs (even plant proteins have lots of carbs) very little animal protein, exercising about half of what I was before and I am more consistently loosing weight then ever before!  Some might try to say that I am losing muscle... well, I personally don't think so.  I feel better than I ever have.  I actually did my weight routine last night and was able to pump up the weights by at least 5 pounds on each machine! I am 2 pounds away from being able to use my scales that will give me a reading on my body fat percentage.  This will be helpful to monitor and see if I am actually loosing muscle mass with my mostly veggie diet.  I will keep you up to date, but I still have 2 pounds before I can start monitoring this.

Now, with all of this being said... I am not touching any food that comes from a box or plastic bag unless the ingredients in the box or bag is singular.  I am not eating ANY processed foods.  I will make difficult foods in advance and freeze them.  If it is too difficult, I try to make the recipe easier or less complex.  I do make exceptions as well for organic chips that I can't make myself and that my kids could not live without.

What are your thoughts? Are you on a high protein diet?

Challenge Day 18 and 19!

As you can see for both days I did not meet my goals.  I did make it to the gym yesterday and did mostly weight training with some walking and elliptical but not much.  My attitudes are changing again about exercise.  Really?  Me change my mind?  hehe  Well, the latest that I reading says that weight training will give me more bang for my calories in so I am going to give it a try... besides, I have to think long term and building a beautiful body.  As far as Aerobic exercise goes, I think I am going to limit this to 30 to 45 minutes +plus daily activities and dog walks.  That would mean that my maximum stay at the gym will be right around an hour.  This will fit so much better into my life than staying there for 2 hours trying get one million steps each day.
What's on the menu tonight?  I think we are going to have guacamole turkey burgers with salad and blue corn chips!  YUM!

Have a great day!

I was able to get some good numbers yesterday despite having to go into the office. We made it to the gym yesterday because Micheal took a half day off work and finished up the garage. Today we're getting the beef, taking it to his parent's farm and slaughtering it. It'll hang for 10 days before we butcher it(cut and wrap). This weekend we're doing the hogs.

I am listening to my doctor and cutting back on my food consumption. I ate less yesterday and made sure that I measured things. My plate is less full, so I started using the smaller plates.

From yesterday: Steps = 10,617. Calorie deficit - 849. Crunches = 100.

I'm on my own for dinner and for the gym today!

Have a good day!

Weigh in Wednesday!

332.5

Don't have time to plug in.  I have to work in the office and time is at a premium.  Lord it is stressful going into the office!
- Tracy

Wednesday, January 19,2011

"Weigh in Wednesday!" Today I weighed 244. That's actually one pound less than last week. I adjusted my scales to match my doctor's as well. She had balance scales that are synced and accurate, so I feel confident that my weight is being reported correctly. Most importantly, though, my weight is down and moved in the right direction.

Yesterday was "Fish Tuesday!" We had cod, green beans and baked potato for supper. The potato was a four-ouncer. That's one serving size. It looked so puny! It was good, though, with some spray butter and two tablespoon of sour cream. Dinner had less than 500 calories.

I didn't work out yesterday since I had to help get the garage ready for Sunday. We'll finish it tonight. I did well with my calorie deficit yesterday and am feeling good about that! I only consumed 1,719 calories yesterday; for me that's really good!

I have to go into the office today for a meeting. Boo! Hiss! after work, I'm swinging by the lab to give my blood sample. No gym tonight, but I'll be back at it tomorrow!!

Steps = 4,882. Calorie deficit - 760 (!) Crunches = 0

So I did make it to the gym today. I took my little one with me and she walked on the treadmill while I did the elliptical for 30 minutes.  I was so proud of her!  I will not make it tonight.  I will be at gymnastics with the kiddo and will be reading during this time. I will try to get as many steps in as possible throughout the day though.

On the menu today... Beef Vegetable Soup.  Strangely enough we had that last Tuesday as well.  I am going to eat some beef.  I have not had meat in several days and need some!

Have a great day!

From yesterday: Steps = 10,484. Calorie deficit = 296. Crunches = 0

I didn't make it to the gym yesterday. Those steps are all from cleaning. The house looks great! I love housework (really!). I think I would have made a great 50's wife. Cute little shirtwaist dress, a touch of red lipstick, cookies in the oven ... But I digress ...

My visit to the dotor was interesting. She took a look at my stats and said immediately. "Calories are too high. You need to eat less." When I protested and said, "But I have a good calorie deficit and I've been exercising a lot. I should have lost SOMETHING the past 6 weeks!!" She stated that it wasn't low enough and my body had probably gotten used to the exercise program. She did write me a prescription for a blood workup, because " ... it's been a year and is time for one."

Okay, well, that's depresing. I feel like a whiney baby when I cry to myself, "I don't wanna eat less! I like to eat!!!" I am going to try and drop my calories to 1800. I am also changing my exercise routine to one less focused on strictly walking to one that balances weight training and aerobics.

When I put an optimistic slant on my day, there is good news from my visit: 1) I probably don't have some sort of medical condition, though the lab will check for it. 2) My cheapy analog dial scales DO weigh 10 pounds heavy. I weighed myself on her balance scale fully clothed, without shoes, and weighed 250 exactly. When I came home, I did the same and weighed 260. What that means is that I DID lose 15 pounds the first 6 weeks of this endeavor. When I report my weight on "Weigh in Wednesday," I imagine I'll report 245 ...

I talked with Michael and we decided to adjust the scale here to read negative 10 when there's nothing on it. Maybe it's a mind trick, but it makes me feel good. I also added "good scale" to our list of things to buy when our tax refund check arrives.

This week is a big one around here. We are finishing butchering. We have a beef and more hogs to do. The last round was done at his parent's place, but this round is done here. There's a lot to do around here to get ready for Sunday. The butcher shop (garage) has to be set up and cleaned. We have to completely clean from top to bottom. All surfaces need to be disinfected. The shelves and ceiling need to be cleaned and all cob webs knocked down. The floor needs to be cleaned. The meat saw needs to be assembled and the blades adjusted. Knives need to be sharpened. Today and tomorrow are not gym days. They are cleaning days. So after work, I will head to the garage and help Michael make sure everything is in order. Thursday, he picks up and slaughters the beef. (The beef will hang for 10 days to age. We won't cut it up until the 30th.) Saturday, he picks up and slaughters the hogs. Since hogs don't have to age, on Sunday friends arrive and we butcher (cut and wrap). I will be using my last 2 "days off" from the January Challenge.

I am looking at this week as a transition week. I am going to reduce my calories and begin my new exercise routine on Thursday. I'll tell you more about what I'm doing in regard to weight training later.

Tracy, if Sunday you're just hanging out and want lesson in butchering, come on by. We'll be in the garage. I'll send you home with some homemade sausage, there's nothing like it!

Big hugs!!

Challenge Day 16

BodyMedia FIT data for January 16, 2011
Calories Burned - 2630 | Calories Consumed - 1717 | Total Activity - 0:08 | Moderate Activity - 0:08 | Vigorous Activity - 0:00 | Steps Taken - 2417 | Sleep Duration - 7:01 | Lying Down - 8:08 | Sleep Efficiency - 86%

Steps  - 2417
Deficit - 913
Crunches - 30

This has to be my worst day yet! I had intentions of going to the gym and did not make it.  Always, feeling guilty!

I do have some good news to report.  I have been struggling with making my waist measurement go down.  Low and behold, I have lost another inch in my waist.  Dr. Oz says to up the monounsaturated fats and that is exactly what I have done over the course of the last 2 weeks.  I will keep you up to date about if this keeps working but for now, I am feeling absolutely AMAZING.  I have not felt so good in a long time.  I meant to blog about this a while back but I remember a moment that the gym where I truly felt as if a fog had been lifted from my brain and eyes.  This was around 10 days ago.

I am not willing to give up my meat either!  I am just keeping it very low in my diet.  All meats have saturated fats and that is what causes you to have a hard belly full of fat.  After just a bit over 2 weeks, I have no hardness in my belly, it is all loose.  That would mean that the fat under the muscle is gone or much less.  This makes me so happy as this is truly is what is at the root of most health issues in America.

Getting geared up to go to the gym as soon as I am done here!  YAY!  I am going to try for 2 hours.  I will have my kiddo with me so it might not pan out.

Have a great day!

Monday, Janaury 17, 2011

We went to the gym yesterday and finished planning our workout routine. We walked while we were there, too. I really like it there. I am VERY excited to use the pool and hot tub. When my leg is healed, I'm there!!

I am going to see my doctor today to talk with her about my weight loss program. I'm taking the following stats with me. (I pulled these numbers from the BodyMedia site.)

Averages from 12/21/10 - 1/16/11

Calories burned 2805
Calories consumed 2461
Calorie deficit 344
Physical activity 53 minutes of moderate activity
Steps = 9421
Sleep 6 hours and 29 minutes -- Sleep efficiency 78%

Protein = 20%
Fat = 40%
Carbs = 40%
Sodium = 3205 mg

Hopefully, I don't have a thyroid issue. Maybe I just need to further reduce my calorie intake. An average deficit of 344 and no weight loss COULD just be a weighing and/or measurement error. Maybe my metabolism is a little slower than average. Maybe my body is just super-efficient! Maybe years and years of yo-yo dieting and made my body resistent to weight loss. If nothing else, the blood work will show my blood fats and other important things.

Another possibility was mentioned to me yesterday. Perhaps my body has become accustomed to the workout routine that I've been doing for the past three months. The first 6 weeks, I walked about an hour an hour a day, and ate just about the same, but lost 15 pounds. Suddenly, the weight loss stopped. I didn't do anything differently. I kept trying with the same plan. It was suggested that maybe I need to shake up the exercise to continue to get results. If that's the case, then the new workout routine will make a difference.

Whatever the case, I am going to keep at it. Certainly, I am fitter and healthier!

I'll keep you posted!

Have a great day!!

Challenge Day 14 and 15!

  • BodyMedia FIT data for January 15, 2011
    Calories Burned - 3203 | Calories Consumed - 1600 | Total Activity - 0:34 | Moderate Activity - 0:34 | Vigorous Activity - 0:00 | Steps Taken - 5634 | Sleep Duration - 8:05 | Lying Down - 8:30 | Sleep Efficiency - 95%
  • BodyMedia FIT data for January 14, 2011
    Calories Burned - 3021 | Calories Consumed - 1500 | Total Activity - 0:19 | Moderate Activity - 0:19 | Vigorous Activity - 0:00 | Steps Taken - 4123 | Sleep Duration - 6:53 | Lying Down - 7:45 | Sleep Efficiency - 89%

OK, so I have been really relaxed with my exercise in the last week.  I think I made it to the gym exactly 1 time all week.  It was a tough week with the kiddos and really felt guilty for leaving them.  I wish that my little one was old enough to go and work out with me.  That would really make things easier.  I will also be trying to get to the gym during the day whenever possible.  When spring comes, it will be easy to get steps in because I can just get up earlier and walk the dog for an hour each morning.  Right now it is very hazardous to do this.  I fell pretty hard yesterday and am surprised that I am feeling as well as I am.  I hit my knee and hip and got up immediately.  A small amount of pain but the knee feels weird.  I didn't work out yesterday because of this.  Today as soon as I get off work, I will be going to the gym.  I MUST get back to it this week.

About my diet.... I might have eluded to this but I am not sure.  I have really changed the way that I eat and think about food since the beginning of the year.  I have read 2 books that have really inspired these changes.. "The China Study" and "YOU on a Diet".  What I have taken from these books is that eating vegetables and vegetable proteins is the way to go.  I have limited "animal" proteins and fats to around 10% of my diet and so far I am amazed at how consistently my body is letting go of the fat.  I have also increased dramatically FIBER, MONOUNSATURATED FATS and OMEGA 3.  I really think that this might be the way to go but only time will tell.  I might start posting my food intake each day as well.

Yesterday I went to movie with my hubby and I had an apple and orange with water.  Everyone else is munching on popcorn ridden with saturated fat and candies loaded with sugar and fat.  I was looking at all of the candy bags and boxes and on average they each had around 1000 calories.  REALLY?  Why we would put that into our bodies?  It has no benefit for the body besides a bit of oral pleasure!  My apple and Orange were quite tasty and I am completely satisfied with my choice!

OK, I will get off my soap box but I have to tell you that something I am doing right now is VERY right.  The weight is continuing to drop off and I am not working nearly as hard.

I will talk to you later! Have a great day!

Sunday, January 16, 2011

We had fun at the gym yesterday. We went right after I got off work and it almost empty! During the hour and a half that we were there, I only saw 5 other people.

I am really glad that Michael is going with me. He seems really into getting back in shape, too! Yesterday, he made a chart for us that has all sorts of different weight training exercises on it. He had us go through about half the exercises to see what weight we should start with. He has a plan for us to follow. Basically, we will workout Monday through Friday. We will do cardio each day, but will alternate between walking on the treadmill, riding the bike, and doing the elliptical. We will do abs four days. On Saturdays and Sundays, if we want to go to the gym, we can, but it will be a swimming or walking day and we can lounge in the sauna or whirlpool if we want. Next month, I would like the challenge to fit in with these new exercise goals.

From yesterday: Steps = 10,012. Calorie defict = 202. Crunches - 50. No, I still have not lost any weight.

Have a great day!!

Saturday, January 15, 2011

I took yesterday off from exercise. It felt good to relax. We're going tonight for more walking and weight training!

Steps = 4043. Calorie deficit = 353. No crunches.

Weight is still exactly the same. No change for more than 6 weeks. (Except for a couple pounds down one day and an immediate rebound.) My doctor's appointment is on Monday. I am looking forward to the results of my blood work!

Have a great day!!

Challenge Day 13

BodyMedia FIT data for January 13, 2011
Calories Burned - 3109 | Calories Consumed - 1802 | Total Activity - 0:28 | Moderate Activity - 0:24 | Vigorous Activity - 0:04 | Steps Taken - 5410 | Sleep Duration - 7:26 | Lying Down - 8:26 | Sleep Efficiency - 88%

Healthy Comfort Food!

I saw a recipe on TV the other day and it looked good. It also looked pretty healthy. I think I'm going to try it! Here's the version I remember (No measurements, I'm sure you'll do just fine!)

Cook some pasta until almost a dente. Spray a glass baking pan with Pam and pour pasta into the pan. Saute some onion and garlic in olive oil. Add mixed greens like chard, spinach and kale. Add some chicken broth and cook until almost done. Place greens over the pasta. Cut mozzarella cheese into chunks (about 1 inch square)and scatter over the greens. Spinkle parmesan around on top, too. Bake for a half hour or so at 350. (Do not cover!)

I'm going to go to the store on Sunday and will get some greens. I'll let you know how I like it!

Friday, January 14, 2011

I have been enjoying the gym. I like working out there a lot. The weight training is fun and different; I haven't felt the tightness in my muscles since I started walking a lot in November. My chest feels tight and strong. I don't get as many steps in as when I just walk at home, though. In February, I'd like to make the challenge more about other forms of exercise, such as swimming and weight training.

From yesterday: Steps = 10,204. (Steps numbers reflect a regular work day and 2 miles on the treadmill at 3 mph) Calorie deficit = 307. Crunches = 50.

I had a cold in December that got pretty bad (I think everybody I know did!). I never quite got over it. It seems to be trying to make a comeback. I've been coughing and my voice is weak. I may skip the workout today and just rest. The heavy breathing seems to kick up a coughing fit. I have used two of my days off for the challenge. I think get five, right?

Concerning the January Challenge, I'm doing pretty well. My weak area is calorie deficit. I should average 750. My average for January is 493. Getting rid of about 250 calories per day should be easy enough. I'll see what I can do.

Have a great day! Big hugs!!

Challenge Day 12

BodyMedia FIT data for January 12, 2011
Calories Burned - 3575 | Calories Consumed - 1594 | Total Activity - 1:32 | Moderate Activity - 1:32 | Vigorous Activity - 0:00 | Steps Taken - 10784 | Sleep Duration - 7:41 | Lying Down - 8:28 | Sleep Efficiency - 91%

Steps - 10,784
Deficit - 1,981
Crunches - 30

Good day.  I did 45 minutes on the elliptical instead of my standard 30.  I hardly even noticed that I was on it longer.  I looked down and it said 29 minutes so I decided to just keep going... after all it is only 3 or 4 more songs right?  After that, I walked for 30 minutes or so and then went to the grocery.

I am finding myself tempted with food lately so I thinking this means that I am not getting enough water (I tend to mistake cravings for just plain dehydration).  I am going to up my intake dramatically to see if this helps.  I have been drinking lots of tea lately so I think that may be why.

Today, I will be making a variation of Ratatouille.  I am just going to use eggplant, mushrooms and onions as the veggies.  I will eat it with brown rice!  I can't wait.  YUM!  Of course, I will sprinkle some chia seeds in.

Monster smoothie was surprising.  I am not a huge fan of banana so I didn''t like it all that much.  I think I am going to try it with some berries.  I will probably be brown but that might be better than the bright green!  It was VERY bright green.  Quite lovely actually.  I was amazed how you could not taste the spinach at all.

Take care and have a great day!!!

Thursday, January 13, 2011

I made an appointment at my doctor's for blood work and a consultation. I plan on taking along my BodyMedia reports along so she can see what I've been doing.

I have dieted my whole life, as I shared before. I have NEVER had a hard time losing weight. The problem has always been keeping it off. We'll see what she says and move forward from there. Meantime, I'll just keep exercising and reporting my food.

Yesterday's numbers were pretty good. Calorie deficit = 603. Steps = 12,344. Crunches = 50.

I am going to the gym today right after work. Walking and weight training for me!!

Have a great day!

Green Monster Smoothie?

I am going to give it try tomorrow morning.  I am told that this smoothie will give you a ton of energy AND the kids will eat/drink it.  I will believe it when I see it.  Here is the recipe:

Ingredients:
  • 2 cups organic spinach
  • 1-1.25 cups milk (your choice of cow’s milk, soy, hemp, almond, rice, etc)
  • 1 tablespoon flax (optional)
  • 1 banana
  • ice
Directions:
1) Flax, 2) spinach, 3) banana, 4) milk. The reason for this order is so the heavier ingredients weigh down the flax and spinach and keep it from flying up around the blender and sticking to the side. Blend everything on the highest setting for 1 minute or so. Finally, add ice and blend on the ice setting. Pour into a large, fancy glass. Sit back, gulp it down, and be prepared to have endless energy!

I am going to replace the flax for chia seeds AND I am going to add a vanilla yogurt to make it even sweeter.  Wish me luck!

Steps - A pitiful 2,085!
Deficit - 1320
Crunches - 30
Weigh in - 335

Ok, so I was a complete slacker yesterday.  I worked all day and then just hung out with the Fam in the evening.  We didn't even go to gymnastics because the weather is just ridiculous.  Not feeling guilty though.  Oh, and I got a hair cut and color!  I will try to upload a picture this weekend!

Darned scales, I weighed a full pound less yesterday.  I swear it is all of the salt from veggie day. Oh well!

Today, is chili leftovers for dinner.  Going to make it to the store to get fresh stuff for salads too.

Take care and have a good one!

Wednesday, Jamuary 12, 2011

Very discouraged!!! Weigh in Wednesday. Said we'd report weight no matter what. Here it is -- 255.

I saw the scale at 252 earlier this week. I have been excercising. I have been reporting my food. I have been eating healthfully. In the past week, I have had a total calorie deficit of 3,575. That should be good for a one pound loss. I am up a pound.

I something's wrong. I am either not reporting accurately, or my body's not "normal." While I am not measuring, I have a pretty good eye for portion sizes. Perhaps I'm wrong. Perhaps I need a refresher.

Two things are going to happen. First, I am going to call the doctor. I said I was before, but never did. I am going to ask for a complete blood work up. Second, I am going to start measuring my portions.

From yesterday: Steps = 8,577. Calorie deficit - 106. Crunches = 50.

Steps - 10,572
Deficit - 1821
Crunches - 20

Did my gym time and had yummy chili for dinner with Wheat Berries... OMG I love them!  Tonight, we are having vegetable beef soup with barley.  I am hitting 35 grams or more fiber each day.  This is great because fiber carries all of the bad stuff out of our bodies!  I hope that it is carrying out some fat with it!

The snow is coming down like crazy here tonight.  I am not sure if I will make it to the gym or not.  I am sure going to try though.  If not, I will probably play walk it out or Just Dance with my kiddo.

Have a great day today!

Tuesday, January 11, 2011

I had a great day yesterday! What made it so great? Well, first I was off work! I also worked around the house (which I LOVE), shopped, and went to the gym. My numbers were fabulous, too!

I won't tease you ...

Steps = 16,938. Calorie deficit = 1,075. (WOW!!) Crunches = 50 (WOW! again!!)

At the gym, I used the treadmill for the bulk of my workout. I also tried the glider; I could only do it for 8 minutes. It was hard and I felt uncoordinated. I guess I'm not used to the movement yet. I also used the weights and then used the crunch machine. I like the crunch machine. I feel like it gives me better form.

I would like to find a book dedicated to older women who want to use gym equipment to get in shape. I feel like I need some direction -- maybe a workout plan, maybe some pictures and hints on form, some exercises for older women. Anyone know of any good ones? Maybe I'll look on Amazon ...

Tonight is "Fish Tuesday!" The manager at OCharley's gave me some cedar planks a couple weeks ago when we went in for dinner. I was raving about the cedar plank salmon. I have them soaking now. I'll have cedar plank salmon, cauliflower, and clementines for dinner.

Tomorrow is "Weigh in Wednesday." I think I'll have some good news to report.

I am trying to decide if I should just get my workout in here today. It's supposed to snow a lot and I don't see any sense in going out if I really don't have to. I might just walk here on the treadmill.

Have a good day!

Monday, January 10, 2011

Yum! Wheat Berries!

I cooked some up and added them to my chili.  They are yummy.  I LOVE the texture.  Try them sometime.  I am thinking they would be great in a lentil soup or something similar.  I have some black eyed peas I need to use up, perhaps I will cook some wheat berries with those.

Whole Foods has them in the bulk section again... really cheap!  I also bought oat berries (groats), I can't wait to try those.  I much prefer oats to wheat.

Challenge Day 9

BodyMedia FIT data for January 9, 2011
Calories Burned - 3295 | Calories Consumed - 1623 | Total Activity - 1:22 | Moderate Activity - 1:22 | Vigorous Activity - 0:00 | Steps Taken - 9618 | Sleep Duration - 8:11 | Lying Down - 8:42 | Sleep Efficiency - 94%

Steps - 9618 (I hate it when I am so close and did not make the next level)
Deficit - 1672
Crunches - 30

Yesterday was a good day t the gym.  My routine is getting easy so I am going to have to kick it up a notch.
My fat pants are officially unwearable.  I still wear them although they are way too big, but now they are dragging the ground and I am stepping on them so it is time to donate them to someone else.  I don't have nearly as many skinny clothes  but will have to make due.  I am definitely not buying more clothes at my current size because I am not going to be here long!  I am just passing through this size.  What is sad, is I just don't want to give those old clothes away.  I will though because I am never going to be that size again!

Dinner tonight... I am not sure.  I am thinking I am going to get my hair cut off to celebrate my current weight wins.  I will post a pic if I do.  I am about due for a current picture.  I went to an event that I did not go to for about a month on Saturday and people were shocked at how good I looked.  I don't see it but ok... I will take it.  When I can fit into a size 24 I will be feeling pretty accomplished.  I was VERY young the last time I wore this size.  Right now I am quite comfortable in my size 26 pants.  It won't be long though.  I am betting another month or 2 and I will be in that size 24 comfortably.  I still have all of those wonderful size 20's from Diana too!  I can't wait to wear those.  Look out world... hot mama incoming!

Talk to you later!  Have a GREAT day!

Monday, January 10, 2011

I really enjoyed my time at the gym yesterday. I used the treadmill and did some weight training. I am going to see about getting a workout schedule from one of the trainers. I can't get in the pool, whirlpool, or steam shower until my stitches get taken out in 10 days. I can assure you, I will as soon as possible!!

I did well yesterday. Steps = 12,846. Calorie deficit = 602. Crunches = 30.

Have a great day! Eat less! Exercise!!

Crunches - 0

As you can see Diana, I had a much worse day than you AND I have no excuses!  Hehe I am just considering this my day off.  We all need a day off.  My calories are so high because I bought Dark Chocolate covered roasted almonds AND edamame.  OMG!  I want to eat them all.  I feel like I got no sleep because of the caffeine in the chocolate.  Oh well, I have them stashed so I can't get to them easily.  They are sooooo good.

Also, we did the Chuck E Cheese thing last night with a big pack of kids.  We also had a sleep over with a couple of those kids.  Fun times.

Today, I am working all day and then will eat dinner and head to the gym for a long workout.  Dinner is going to be grilled chicken with mashed potatoes, spinach and a balsamic vinegar glaze drizzled over the entire thing.  We might even deep fry some homemade onion rings and place them on top.  YUM!  I can't wait.

Have a good one!

January 9, 2011

Another day without walking. :( At least today I'll be able to exercise, because we are going to the gym. I'm VERY excited about it. One of the most exciting parts is that Michael will be going, too! We usually will not be going at the same time, but since Sunday has always been "our" day, we will go on Sundays together.

I'm also looking forward to the pool. Swimming is great exercise and something that I love. I can't wear the BodyMedia armband in the pool, so when I swim, it'll just have to be "secret" exercise. I wonder how the armband will report things like the elliptical and weight training? My plan is to go immediately after work. I'll still use the treadmill here in the mornings or when I can't get away because of the kids.

My life has been pretty stressful lately. Situations with the kids, family, my father's health, finances and work have been taking up a lot of my mind and a lot of my attention. I honestly wonder sometimes how I manage to keep it all glued together. It's hard to remember that if I don't take care of myself, and my needs, I won't be able to keep everything that I am responsible for balanced and running smoothly. My diet and exercise program are really the key to my well-being. Keeping myself "on target" in regard to diet and excercise ensures my mental, emotional and physical health. Without those three things in sync, the rest of my life will not operate smoothly.

Oh, by the way, I lost weight. (Teehee, I saved that for last and kinda sprung in on ya, didn't I?? Not really a "by the way" sorta comment is it??) My crappy, crummy, cheapy scales say I lost 3 pounds! They have redeemed themselves in my eyes! The needle DOES move after all! I'm sticking with those crappy, crummy, cheapy scales, even though they weigh 10 pounds heavy. Afterall, everyone deserves a chance to perform an honest day's work! haha

Again, I didn't walk yesterday, so my numbers don't look all that great.

Steps = 4,637. Calorie deficit = 115. Crunches = 30

Have a great day and remember that your life depends on your health and wellness plan!

Big hugs, Tracy! You are doing so well! I love you!

Due to work and my visit to the dermatologist, I didn't walk at all yesterday. Boo! Hiss!! Hopefully, he got the rest of the cells he was worried about. I also had him burn off an ugly spot on the same thigh. The other spot was benign, but it was ugly and I picked at it.

When I was at the doctor I got weighed. Remember my "scale drama" and the fact that my new, cheapy analog scales showed 10 pounds heavier? I bet you thought I was being dramatic and vain, didn't you?? Well, as it tuns out, those new scales DO weigh heavy! 10 pounds heavy! Victory!! I am vindicated! I know, I know, I am still dramatic and vain! hahaha

Honestly, though, it's really not the numbers and we all know that. It's how much fat you carry. It's how much strain you put on your heart. It's really about how fit you are. It's your attitude and your self-esteem. Don't get me wrong, physical beauty helps, too! teehee!

I am fitter and far happier with myself the past 12 weeks. Though I am still not sleeping 8 hours and am not sleeping the night through, my sleep has improved. I average about 7 hours now. My sleep efficiency is about 83%. That means that, on average, I lay down for about 8 1/2 hours, but only sleep 7 of them.

The really big news today is that Michael and I are joining a gym! It's a really close by and very nice! It has a pool (I love to swim!), all the exercise equipment you could ask for, sauna, steam, classes, etc. We are signing up tomorrow! I'll still use the treadmill here when I can't get out because of the kids or whatever, but it'll be great diversion when I get bored. I might even take a class! (All the classes are free!)

I'm not allowed to walk today, but will be able to tomorrow. I did pretty well with my consumption yesterday. I tried to keep things under control since I couldn't workout. My number aren't great, but I did have a deficit.

Steps = 4,685. Calorie deficit = 82. Crunches = 30.

Have a great day!

Challenge Day 6

BodyMedia FIT data for January 6, 2011
Calories Burned - 3279 | Calories Consumed - 1617 | Total Activity - 0:43 | Moderate Activity - 0:41 | Vigorous Activity - 0:02 | Steps Taken - 6581 | Sleep Duration - 10:32 | Lying Down - 11:11 | Sleep Efficiency - 94%  How do you like those sleep numbers?  I went back to bed after my kiddos were off to school and slept till noon!  It was great!
Steps - 8571
Deficit - 1662
Crunches - 30

Ok, my steps reported by BodyMedia are 2k steps lower than I list here.  Why?  Because I forgot to put on my dang armband before I took the dog for a walk!  I was so mad when I figured it out too! I know that the walk I took was a bit more than 2k so I am reporting the 2k in my official numbers!

Today, I work until noon and then I am off to the gym!  Tonight is gymnastics and I am just going to hang out and watch my kiddo.  Hitting the gym before, will allow me to do this without guilt!  Tonight, we are having black beans, brown rice, salmon patties and broccoli!  Yummy!  We will have some fruit for dessert to get in all of my colors.  I will definitely get the fiber that I need in my diet!  Yay!

Take care and have an awesome day!

I ate too much yesterday! It started at breakfast and continued throughout the day. The good news is that I walked a lot!

Calorie surplus = +3. Steps = 12,866. Crunches = 30.

All the steps I got in were on the treadmill. I'm doing really well with that. I am pleased with the improvement that I've made since I got it at the end of Novemeber. I am walking so fast that if I picked up my knees and added a little arm action, I'd be jogging. And, boy, oh boy, do I work up a sweat! It feels good to exercise so hard! I love it!!

As far as my New Year's resolutions, I am doing really well, with the exception of my calories. I have some issues with consumption. To put it simply, if it's there, I eat it. Yesterday it was sweets. There were there, so I ate them. It's my "Mount Everest" issue! (You know, they climbed it "because it was there!")I suppose the best thing is to just not have them in the house ...

Have a great day!

Challenge Day 5

BodyMedia FIT data for January 5, 2011
Calories Burned - 3469 | Calories Consumed - 1582 | Total Activity - 1:35 | Moderate Activity - 1:35 | Vigorous Activity - 0:00 | Steps Taken - 12061 | Sleep Duration - 7:09 | Lying Down - 7:31 | Sleep Efficiency - 95%

Steps - 12061
Deficit - 1887
Crunches - 20

I tried like crazy to trigger vigorous activity on the elliptical yesterday and was not successful.  My heart rate was in the range of 150 and still no vigorous.  I am sure it is because my arms stay relatively stationary on it.  If I jog, I can trigger it.  Jogging is just so hard on the knees and the elliptical is pretty low impact.  I am going to stick with the elliptical until my weight is lower to save my knees.  I think that saving my knees is much more important that the few extra calories that I "might" burn.  My family has a history of knee replacements and I would like to keep mine... thank you! :-)

Today, I am taking the dog to the dog park where I get to fetch for the ball.  LOL  I throw the ball, the dog chases it and then I go fetch it.  That will be good for several steps and shorten my time at the gym.  The dog is driving me crazy so he REALLY needs to run at the dog park.  That will keep him well behaved for about 2 days. :-)

I told the kids that I would make them BLT sandwiches for dinner tonight.  We are also having Tabuli with 2 or 3 times the amount of tomatoes it calls for.  Perhaps some broccoli as well.

Doing well with eating 3 colors of vegetable and fruit at lunch and dinner.  The oats is turning out to be a great meal for the entire family.  Everyone has some for breakfast.  Looks like I am going to be making some every week!  I LOVE THAT!

Have a great day!

My experiment proved correct! When I log 3.25 miles on the treadmill, I get 10,000+ on a work day. Working from home is great, except for the fact that I don't have far to walk for anything. If I were working in the office, there would be steps to bathroom, steps to the cafeteria, steps to my car ... Don't get me wrong, I wouldn't give it up!!!

Today, I am going to try two 35 minute walks on the treadmill. Maybe if I space out the walks, I'll get my metabolism up for a longer period.

I am still considering getting a step and a step program. I think it would be fun; it would also be someting different to try. Tracy thinks that it would make my butt firmer and cuter. Nothing wrong with a cute, firm butt!

Tomorrow, I'm having a bigger divet taken out of my leg. It seems they didn't get all of that nasty spot! It hurt pretty badly last time when they removed it. There were two stitches. This time, there will be more stitches and it'll hurt more. I probably won't be able to walk Friday, Saturday and Sunday. That's bumming me out!

I did pretty well yesterday. Steps = 10,851. Calorie deficit = 605. Crunches - 30

I hope that your day is fabulous! TTYL!

Challenge Day 4

BodyMedia FIT data for January 4, 2011
Calories Burned - 3380 | Calories Consumed - 1407 | Total Activity - 1:11 | Moderate Activity - 1:02 | Vigorous Activity - 0:09 | Steps Taken - 8386 | Sleep Duration - 6:40 | Lying Down - 7:04 | Sleep Efficiency - 94%

Steps - 8386
Deficit - 1973 (too high again)
Crunches - 30
Weigh in - 337 (half pound more than yesterday - Boo!)

I ate completely vegetarian yesterday.  I think I had a lot more salt in my diet than usual and this is why my weight is a bit higher today then yesterday.  No biggie though.  I am not so sure that I enjoyed my vegetarian day so much.  Actually it was a vegan day.  I meant to eat a yogurt and kept forgetting.  Today, I am planning yogurt for my snacks.  I need the bacteria in the yogurt with all of the vegie and fiber. :-)

Today is a relatively easy day... work and then dinner with the family and then head to the gym.

I wish you all the best today!

Wednesday, January 5, 2010

First, it's "Weigh in Wednesday." I weighed 254 today. It's the first loss I've shown since my "scale crisis" about a month ago. The pounds aren't exactly melting off are they? I'm going to push that depressing fact aside and concentrate on the positive.

I logged an hour on the treadmill and put in 3 miles yesterday. I figured that would be enough to hit 10,000 on a work day. Well, it's not quite enough. I'm going to have to go 3.25 miles on work days or I won't get 10,000 steps in.

I ate fish yesterday for dinner, since it was "Fish Tuesday." It was frozen ocean perch. It was awful. I baked it with a lemon butter dill baste. The sauce was good, but the fish was rubbery and very strong tasting. I honestly would have rather had a can of tuna. I was very disappointed because I really like fish and was looking forward to it. Hopefully, the rest of the fish I bought for the month won't be as bad.

I found some frozen birthday cake in the freezer when I cleaning it out. I brought it in the house, intending to send it with Michael's lunch. During a middle of the night raid, I ate some of it. I just can't be trusted, can I??????

Numbers from yesterday?

Steps = 9,814. Calorie deficit = 319. I have honestly been forgetting crunches. I did 30 on January 2nd and 30 yesterday. I have decided that it's best to get off the treadmill and stretch right away. When I establish that routine, I'll be better able to remember the crunches.

Tonight, I take my grand-daughter to Girl Scouts, so dinner will be rushed. I think tonight will be sloppy joes, carrot sticks and grapes. Yes, I'll have it on a whole wheat bun!!

Have a great day!

Challenge Day 3

BodyMedia FIT data for January 3, 2011
Calories Burned - 3618 | Calories Consumed - 1558 | Total Activity - 1:17 | Moderate Activity - 1:16 | Vigorous Activity - 0:01 | Steps Taken - 10685 | Sleep Duration - 9:14 | Lying Down - 10:12 | Sleep Efficiency - 91%
Steps - 10685
Deficit - 2060 (too high!)
Crunches - 20

I made oats for a week and a half  and froze it.  I also made some yummy turkey burgers and froze them.  I only managed one meal of the burgers though.  We had guacamole turkey burgers for dinner... the entire family chowed down!  It was YUMMY!

Today is my veggie day.  I am going to make some yummy grilled veggies tonight for veggie panini's.  Lunch is a salad and fruit.  I may take Diana's lead and have some fish as well.

It feels good to work out again.  Last night was an absolute breeze.  I even kicked it up a notch on the elliptical.  I got a minute of vigorous activity on the elliptical so I am going to play with that a bit to see if I can can get even more next time.

Tonight is the big game AND gymnastics.  I will probably walk the track at the rec center while my daughter does gymnastics tonight.  Tuesday's are always stressful!
Have a great one!

Not a bad day yesterday. Calorie deficit = 674. Steps = 10,019.

I had a sushi snack at the hospital when I went to visit my dad. The soy sauce in combination with my dinner last night made my sodium rather high at 4,580. But everything else was pretty good.

I'll have to make sure I get in my hour on the treadmill because it's back to work today after 3 days off. It's also "Fish Tuesday!" We're having perch. I haven't decided how I'm going to make it.

Not much time this morning!

Have a great day!

Challenge Day 2

BodyMedia FIT data for January 2, 2011
Calories Burned - 3422 | Calories Consumed - 1615 | Total Activity - 1:38 | Moderate Activity - 1:38 | Vigorous Activity - 0:00 | Steps Taken - 10697 | Sleep Duration - 6:53 | Lying Down - 7:30 | Sleep Efficiency - 92%

Steps - 10,697
Deficit - 1807
Crunches - 20

I made it to the gym and just did an hour on the treadmill.  That was the extent of my exercise for the day.  I sat on my rear all day while I worked.  I slept great last night compared to vacation week where I did not exercise.  It is amazing how big of a difference it makes in sleep.  Today, I will get to the gym and do the elliptical and treadmill.  I also have to get to the grocery and I am making turkey burgers to freeze and steel cut oats.  We need some quick meals around here and both of these fit the bill quite well.

At the grocery, I am going to look for Chia seeds and start adding them to some of our foods.  I also need clementines.  I swear we go through 4 cartons of the these things every week!  My kids ate the last of them so I did not have one for breakfast... boo!

Looking forward to a great day!

What are you having for dinner?

I am what you might call an old-fashioned cook. I cook like Paula Dean. Like she says, "I'm your cook, not your doctor." Needless to say, this doesn't always fit well with a diet! So, I am now trying to cook things that I like and in a way that is healthier. Tracy likes to share recipes. Here's one of mine. It's very easy, very yummy and not that bad for you.

Cranberry Onion Chicken

3 chicken thigh/leg pieces
1 can whole berry cranberry sauce
1 package dry onion soup mix

Remove all skin and visible fat from chicken. Separate leg and thigh. Arrange in a slow cooker. Sprinkle onion soup mix over it. Smother with cranberry sauce. Cook all day on low. Serve with sauce. Very good with rice.

I used the BodyMedia "create recipe" function and the numbers for this dish are pretty good (except for the sodium!).

Portion size is one leg and one thigh, or 1/3 of the recipe.

Calories - 411
Fat = 13 grams (29%)
Protein = 44 gram (43%)
Carbs = 27 grams (27%)
Sodium = 1,302 mg

I have made this same recipe with pork roast, too. It's very good. I tried it with beef once and didn't like it very much.

January 3, 2011

Yesterday went well. We butchered 4 hogs. Although it was bit warm (which makes the meat a little harder to work with) it was cold enough to keep the pork from going bad. The pork chops and roasts are trimmed of all visible fat and the sausage is very lean. After we showered and rested a bit, I cooked some of the sausage. There was absolutely no melted fat in the frying pan. None. Really. Boy, was it good! Fresh meat. No hormones. No antibiotics. Free-range. The animals are treated with respect and consideration while being raised and during slaughter. Processed properly. Cut and trimmed to order. You can really taste the difference. We have 3 more hogs and a steer to process this month. Our share will provide enough beef and pork for a year.

I had a pretty good day as far as my dietary and exercize goals were concerned. I did an hour on the treadmill in the morning. I took oranges and a vegetable tray. I ate my barbecued sandwich without a bun. But, I sucumbed to the raisin turnovers that my mother-in-law always brings. They are soft shortbread folded over raisins that are kind of like mincemeat pie filling. I ate 4. They were very good, as always. It wouldn't be a butchering day with the family without them! I counted them as 100 calories each.

For the day: Calorie deficit = 609. Steps - 12,335. Crunches = 30 (I actually forgot them yesteerday!)

Have a good day! Move more! Eat less!

Challenge Day 1

BodyMedia FIT data for January 1, 2011
Calories Burned - 3193 | Calories Consumed - 1423 | Total Activity - 0:45 | Moderate Activity - 0:45 | Vigorous Activity - 0:00 | Steps Taken - 6313 | Sleep Duration - 6:35 | Lying Down - 7:12 | Sleep Efficiency - 91%

I did 20 crunches!

We went to a party again yesterday so my time was limited.  We did get my treadmill moved into the living room from the basement.  I am not sure how much that is going to help though.  I much prefer going to the gym!  Tonight, my husband said that he would go to the gym with me.  As soon as I am off work, we are eating dinner and then heading there.  I can't wait.  I have not set foot in the gym since the 23rd of December.  The break has been very nice and has allowed me to do some reading.

I have jump started weight loss again.  I am not sure if it is the break in the routine or the change in my diet.  I suspect it is a bit of both but mostly change in diet (once again).  If I start hitting a plateau, I start changing things up again.  This will almost always result in weight loss.  Last time, I increased my calorie intake and it worked!  This time, I am changing what I eat and the quality of the food I consume.

2011 is going to a great year!

Who says thirteen is an unlucky number? Look at all the 13s in my numbers from yesterday!

Calorie deficit = 1,313. Steps talen 13,833.

Needless to say, I had a good day on January 1st! I began the day by walking 1 hour at 3 mph on the treadmill. No only did that ensure I'd get 10,000 steps in, but it also gave me more than 1 1/2 hours of physical activity. It also really increased my calorie burn.

What people say about the benefits of exercize is so true. When I really exercize hard (Believe me, walking for an hour at 3 mph is hard exercize for me!) my attitude throughout the day is far better than when I don't. I have more energy, I eat less, and I sleep better.

I also stuck with my other dietary goals yesterday. No salt was added to my food. I ate only whole grains and non-fat dairy. I bought fish at Meijers for the month. Four different kinds of frozen fish which I'll prepare four different ways will make "Fish Tuesday" interesting.

Today we are butchering the hogs that Michael slaughtered yesterday. It'll be long day standing on my feet. I have control over the cuts and trim. This year, I'm having the guys trim all the fat off the roasts and chops. I won't take any "country-style ribs" or fresh side as they are way too fatty. Those cuts will all be ground as sausage. The sausage grind will be 90% lean.

I also decided against taking my usual Apple Spice Cake to share with everyone today. I decided on a vegetable tray instead.

I hope that everyone has a great day! More move! Eat less!

January 1st!

Like Diana, I am going to post some of my health related resolutions...

- Eliminate Diet Coke almost entirely from my diet.  I won't beat myself up if I have a couple a week.
- Drink GREEN tea - 7 times the antioxidants as black tea with less caffeine
- Prepare and plan meals in advance as much as possible.
- Eat a whole grain hot breakfast each morning with an orange or fruit with vitamin C (increases the LDL stabilizing effects by 4 fold)  I will have a freezable recipe for you very soon!
- Remove cheese from my diet so that I eat it less than once per week.
- Increase my nut intake and monounsaturated fats
- Take my fish oil supplement daily
- Do not eat bread unless it is 100% whole wheat.
- Remove ALL HFCS from my home and do not allow it to enter.  I will not beat myself or my kids up over this though.  We will be searching for alternative brands of ketchup and such.
- Limit my animal fat and protein intake to about 10% of my diet.
- Try to eat 3 different colors of fruit and vegie at lunch and dinner. White and brown do not count as a color!
- Blog each day.
- Share what I am learning with my blog friends!
- Keep going with the aerobic exercise and add resistance training at least 2 times per week.

2011 is going to be a fantastic year where lots of aspirations will be realized.  Life is good!

I am so excited to begin the January Challenge! I know that both Tracy and I will do our very best. I am confident we can achieve ALL the goals that we set this month.

I have 80 pounds to lose and I plan to lose it in 53 weeks. (That's 1.5 pounds a week for all you mathematicians out there.)

Once again here are my resoultions for 2011:

10,000 steps a day
750 daily calorie deficit
No added salt to food
Only non-fat dairy
Only whole grain (except rice)
Limited cheese
Fish once a week

And, a resolution related to the health of others -- Give blood every 8 weeks.

Sure, the bar is high. So are my expectations. Join me in the quest for health and well-being!
